STRUCTURAL DEPTH

The existing system was determined to be adequate to support the lateral loads.  But, the distributions of the resisting elements do not seem to be the most efficient.  Therefore, it is desired to redesign the lateral system to be more efficient.  The depth analysis will investigate a change in the existing lateral system.  An investigation of two options in optimizing the lateral force resisting system for Pearl Hall will be completed.  ETABS will be used to evaluate the lateral systems.  First, a seismic analysis will be performed using the existing reinforced concrete shears walls, called lateral system #1.  Some existing walls will be used and modified, while some will be eliminated.  Since the building, uses steel trusses, beams, girders, columns, and metal decking, Pearl Hall will be designed as a completely steel building.  A seismic analysis using a braced frame system, called lateral system #2.  These two systems will be compared for cost.

ARCHITECTURAL BREADTH

The breezeway on the lower level is rarely used.  Classes use it for outside presentations occasionally, and it is used for a dance once a year.  Most of the school year it is too cold to use the space, so students rarely gather there.  Therefore, the breezeway can be closed in order to provide a pleasant space for students and faculty to use. An enclosure will be designed for the breezeway to maintain aesthetics, yet make the space functional. Then, the cost effectiveness will be determined.

MECHANICAL BREADTH

An architecture student discovered that the existing crit-bridge is 20˚F colder than the studio, because it has no insulation.  Therefore, a solution needs to be investigated to properly heat and insulate the space.  There will be an investigation of alternative ways to reduce energy use.  In order to do this, an energy model will be made in Trace to determine the existing performance and the proposed redesign for the crit-bridge. 

 In addition, the enclosure of the breezeway will require an addition of heating and ventilation to the space.  Therefore, a HVAC system will be designed for the enclosed breezeway and evaluated for energy efficiency in TRACE.  Then, a cost analysis will be performed to determine the feasibility of the re-design.
